Prenatal Vitamins…DO You Really Need Them?

by Keith M. Henry

Due to our increased knowledge with regard to health, many women have become informed with regard to the importance of prenatal vitamins and their role in preventing birth defects. It is important to know that both mother and child do have increased nutritional needs during pregnancy.Although many women are prescribed prenatal vitamins by their doctors during their pregnancy, it is becoming more common in some areas that even women who are planning to conceive begin taking prenatal vitamins. Thus many women begin protecting their body’s early.

Most of the prenatal vitamins currently available are meant to make-up for possible nutritional failings. They almost always include such nutrients as folic acid, calcium, and iron. These nutrients lessen the likelihood of birth defects caused by nutritional deficiencies.

IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS FOR MOTHER AND CHILD:

DHA

DHA is a fatty acid and is necessary for a baby’s brain development. It is needed by the child from the very earliest stages of pregnancy throughout the time of breastfeeding. DHA belongs to the omega -3 family of fatty acids and is essential, especially in pregnancy.

IRON

The mineral iron is drawn upon heavily by the baby in the third trimester of pregnancy; it draws its supply from the stored supply of the mother. Iron is very important, and will be found in most prenatal vitamins.

FOLIC ACID

Folic acid, as many women already know, is absolutely crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects that can occur in babies. Interestingly it is found in several of the foods that we eat. It is found in dark leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, whole grain, etc.

Folic acid has been proven crucial for a baby’s neural tube development, especially during the first trimester when women are most likely to suffer from nausea and vomiting. In fact, some recommend women should start taking about 400 micrograms of folate at least a month before they start trying to conceive.

CALCIUM

Calcium as most women are aware is extremely important, it is more so important in the development of a baby. Calcium, along with magnesium, help protects the mother’s bones. The recommended amount of 1200 mg. per day of is not found in most prenatal supplements. It should be remembered, however, that you will obtain some of your calcium from food.

Not all prenatal vitamins are of the same quality of course. They all tend to have all of the basic nutrients in them that are necessary at such a crucial time for a woman’s body. However, the best prenatal will provide what mother and child needs, at just the right amounts, as well as avoiding amounts that tend to toxicity.

How to Ready Yourself for Sleep

by Susan Harris

Do you lie awake many nights waiting for sleep? Maybe you need to look at your sleep hygiene.

Sleep hygiene is a relatively new concept. It helps you think of caring for yourself in preparation for sleep, just as you might care for your teeth. If you suffer from insomnia, you should take a look at various elements of your sleep hygiene:

*Eliminating caffeine or chocolate. Try this for a few days. The effect of these two on your body can change over time. Taking caffeine or chocolate even in the morning may be able to affect your night-time sleep.

*Prolonged evening exercise. Taking you 30-minute walk at bedtime can keep you from sleeping.

*Sugar. Sweets taken late in the day can stimulate your system, making it hard to sleep. Even natural sugar, like in orange juice, can be a problem for some people.

*Arguments. Instead of getting into arguments in the evening, make an appointment to argue the next day, preferrably not at bedtime!

*Creative thinking. Projects worked on in the evening can get your mind going… and going… and going.

So much for what to avoid. So, what can you DO to improve your sleep hygiene?

*In the evening, keep your activities dull and quiet. Do them calmly.

*If you read near bedtime, read news magazines or other items that have no exciting story line.

*For watching TV and video, choose documentaries over thrillers.

So, now you have plenty of tips for good sleep hygiene. Try them out. They could be just what you are looking for.

Asthma helped by Exercise

by Louise Servage

The road to controlling the effects of asthma and its symptoms is not an easy one to follow. The regime will include, sometimes, daily doses of medication and meticulous preparation for the next attack, so as to reduce its severity.

If you have ever had the misfortune of suffering from asthma, you know just how much you will have to do in order to find a proper treatment for your woes. Though, few are lucky enough to identify ways by which to eliminate their asthma related symptoms.

Combining medicines with a holistic approach is the norm and in fact, no two asthmatics will be found using the same means to cure their symptoms. However, a suitable option in curing asthma is to try the natural solutions such as exercise for asthma.

To be sure, exercise for asthma will mean any and all forms of exercises that help to improve the condition of an asthmatic patient. It is hard to pinpoint any one exercise as being the best.

The main benefit, according to the experts, for using exercise to counteract asthma can be seen by looking at the fact that when a person exercises correctly, it helps by opening up the bronchial tubes as well as constricted airways and provides relief to the sufferer. Symptoms prior to exercise should not be as bad after exercise.

Natural is Best

Aerobics is considered a worthwhile exercise for asthma, walking and even dancing are also good choices. Any other exercise that will increase your heart rate is also considered to be beneficial to asthma sufferers.

There are certain asthmatics that need to rely on exercises for asthma with which a connection is established between the body and mind. Yoga is the best example of that exercise, as it allows both mind and body to relax and unite. Breathing exercises taught by yoga instructors are an essential element of the exercise. These breathing techniques also require the participant to be able to hold a number of different postures while at the same time focus on deep breathing as well as focusing your mind on what you are doing.

Be careful, asthma can also be induced by exercise. Before commencing with a particular exercise for asthma, make sure that you understand how you will be affected and only proceed if the exercise is risk free.

There is no doubt that exercise for asthma is a useful tool in combating and controlling symptoms of asthma. Your physician should always be consulted before you commence an exercise programme to combat the effects of asthma.

Kick Stress’s Butt Naturally

by Floella McFee

Introduction: Homeopathic Philosophy

There has been an up-surge in herbal stress remedies in recent years. Everybody these days seems to suffer from stress. Nevertheless stress is a killer! Not to cause you any distress. Stress produces particular chemical reactions in the body, which, if left unchecked, can lead to everything from indigestion, to sexual dysfunction; from major depression to heart failure, and cancer. Whilst some might consult a medical professional to combat the onset of stress, others might sooner deal with through herbalism and homeopathy. The effectiveness of homeopathy is widely disputed by conventional science, but its philosophy is quite simple and rather runs along the lines of trying to boost the body’s systems of dealing with symptoms.

Herbs are Chemicals Too!

The common faith behind this trust in herbal remedies is that they are natural, trusted for centuries and will have fewer side effects than conventional drug therapies. Yet many of the herbal remedies for stress are related, if not the active ingredient, for the synthetic counterparts: valerian root for instance, a common substitute for sleeping pills, forms the basis of valium!

If They are Chemicals What Do They Do?

What many of the herbal remedies do in stress relief is either calm the system down, or act as a sedative or tranquilizer (Hops,) Some claim to have anti-oxidants (Flavinoids) (Passion Flower). Some claim to be mood stabilizers such as Skull Cap; Cat nip works on de-stressing the brain and well as calming the digestive system. Quite the opposite effect that the plant has on a cat! Something like Rhodiola, an adaptogenic herb suggested for people who are continually have disrupted sleep patterns, regulates the heart, as well as suppressing the depression causing chemicals in the brain and improving the serotonin levels. It’s also an aphrodisiac: perhaps another way of improving the mood? Chamomile, commonly drunk as a sedative tea will also help the immune system during times of depression. St John’s Wort is commonly also used as a natural anti-depressant although it should be used with caution if taking other medication.

Other uses For the Herbs

However, herbal stress remedies do not necessarily have to be ingested to be effective. Aromatherapy has always been a popular way to relax. Lavender oil, either burned or dropped in a bath is claimed by many to be soothing and calming. In the end, whatever herbal remedy is chosen, stress can also be combated by exercise, a good diet and time dedicated to switching off.

Conclusions

Herbal remedies have been used for thousands of years. Some of the medications we use today were originally based on natural materials. Herbal remedies are an effective treatment for many ailments, not limited to but including conditions such as stress.

Feel that you are Sweating too Much? – This is Why

by Victor Lorentzo

Many people ask themselves: Why am I sweating so much? Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a frustrating and challenging problem that too many are suffering from.

From what we know at the moment there are between eight and ten million people in America who suffer from excessive sweating. There are probably a lot more since excessive sweating is not something we like to share. Not even with our doctors. The problem is at the same time growing and a higher number of people are experiencing this problem on a daily basis.

There are several reasons for why the sweat problem is growing. One is the lack of research in the area. Excessive sweating is not looked at as a serious problem enough to do research on.

The modern American lifestyle consists of a lot of bad food combined with a growing lack of activity and recreation. This is one of the most important reasons why the number of excessive sweaters is growing.

A different important modern problem is all the different cosmetic products we use. Soaps, deodorants, shampoo, body lotion. Many of these contain toxins and bacteria that irritate the skin. One of the most important jobs of our sweat glands is to help control our bacteria level.

If we want to reduce the level of sweating we experience every day it is necessary to look at alternative methods for hygiene as well as our diet and our activity level. By getting rid of the bacteria and toxins stored on our bodies and allowing the blood to flow smoother through our bodies we are closer to a more sweat free lifestyle.

With a reduced level of sweat life will get more enjoyable, and you will probably feel freer, since you do not have to take your sweat issue into concern every time you plan on doing something.

Acne Herbal Remedies

Teenagers are willing to try anything, especially when it comes to acne. Every day, there is a new acne herbal remedy that comes out, and each new acne remedy costs more than the one before it. Although most of these herbal acne remedies are safe, there is no guarantee that they are. This is why I was hesitant to buy my daughter the acne herbal remedies that she was asking for. At the age of 13, she did not have the money to buy the acne herbal remedy herself. When I told her that she looked beautiful, she just gave me a look. She said that she was hideous with her acne, And then went to her room to cry. Sometimes girls can be so difficult!

I read up on the acne herbal remedies that she was talking about. Although there was no medical proof that they were effective, they at least seemed to be harmless. I finally thought about it for a while and struck a deal with her. She could try the acne herbal remedy if she would also try a diet and nutrition plan first.

My daughter, you see, ate like most teenagers. She would have pizza whenever she got the chance, and although she was not overweight, and she exercised plenty, I couldn’t help but think that her diet was contributing to her acne and perhaps having bad effects on the rest of her health. She seemed to be chronically depressed and moody. Besides being a safe natural healing remedy, I couldn’t help but think that having a good diet would make her feel better as well.

She agreed to give the diet plan two weeks, and if she followed it correctly and her acne didn’t clear up, I would help her get the acne herbal remedies. For the first week, nothing happened. Although her energy level seemed to improve noticeably, and her mood was better, the diet did not work as a natural acne remedy. Then in the middle of the second week, her acne suddenly started to go away. Although it was not gone at the end of the second week, it looked like she would not need the acne herbal remedies if she tried it for longer. She was so excited to see the result that she agreed to give the diet a couple more weeks. In the end, it didn’t completely cure her acne. Once she tried the acne herbal remedies, however, the rest of it disappeared. It turned out that we were both partly right.
