Health And Safety At Work

It doesn’t matter what kind of industry you are involved in, you always have to worry about health and safety at work. Though there are some occupations that are more dangerous than others, there is always something that can go wrong at any type of job. Even if you work in the mail room at a large corporation, there are many things that can happen to you. This is why you should always carefully read through your employee handbook to make sure you know safety procedures to keep you safe, as well as what to do in the event of an emergency.

For my husband, health and safety at work is a huge issue. He works in construction, and this means that he is at high risk for injury each and every day when he goes to work. His company is very good about health and safety at work, but there are many construction companies who are not. His company knows that not only can people get hurt, there are many legal issues involved when employees do not follow safety regulations.

If you’re concerned about health and safety at work, you should speak to a supervisor. Let them know that you are not clear about what you should be doing to stay safe, or if there is a specific issue that is bothering you. For the most part, they should be able to go through your employee handbook with you to show you the specific rules about health and safety at work. If you’re not satisfied with what you find, make sure you speak up so that the issue can be resolved. When potential safety issues are ignored, people get hurt. Learn more about work health and safety issues from this book: Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Fifth Edition

If you cannot seem to get the health and safety issues at work resolved to your satisfaction, make sure you speak up. Most companies have to answer to OSHA. This is an agency that make sure companies are taking health and safety at work seriously. They may come any time to inspect the working conditions of just about any establishment you can think of. If there are serious violations the business may be shut down. When you feel your safety is not being taken seriously, you may have to ask OSHA for help. You may be worried that this will brand you a troublemaker, but no one has to know you were the one who called. If your company does not take your health and safety seriously, you may not want to be working for them anyway.

Dr Atkins New Diet Cookbook

Though the Atkins diet craze has died down somewhat, there are still many people who want to try it. Though I am not big on fad diets, this is one that I used with some success. I had to quit using it though, because the Atkins diet information I was finding was a bit scary to me. Though many of the foods on the diet are ones that people love to eat, it really isn’t that great for your heart. That doesn’t mean you can’t use it, but you should really talk to a doctor before you commit yourself to following Dr Atkins new diet cookbook.

You should find all of the Atkins diet information you can find before you begin. You don’t want to start the diet on what you think you know. If you have a heart condition, you really have to watch what you eat, and some of the foods on this diet are not good for the heart. I would not suggest that anyone use this diet if they have heart disease in their family, and some of the Atkins diet information that you find will tell you just that. Your doctor can tell you more about it, and why this diet might not be for you.

You can find Atkins diet information in many places, but if you read some of the many books on the diet you will find what you need. You should know that there are many who think this diet is all about eating fatty steaks, bacon and eggs, but your common sense should tell you that this is not good for you. I know the diet worked for me before I quit using it, so there is something to the claims that it works, but it also is very iffy on the nutritional side.
When looking for Atkins diet information, make sure you are getting real health information, and not just one person’s view of it. Start by reading the original book by Dr Atkins that began it all: Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, Revised Edition This diet goes in stages, and once you get past the first stage, you are going to be eating a great variety of food, but in the beginning you are going to be pretty limited. What many leave out when talking about Atkins diet information is that you really do have to watch your portions. Many think that they can just eat the right foods, but they don’t have to watch the portion size, and they can eat whenever. You can never lose anything if you are taking in too many calories. This holds true for any and all diets.

Age Related Macular Degeneration

Our eyes provide us with a daily visual feast of the world around us. Ironically, it’s so easy to take our eyesight for granted. However, as we age, many parts and body systems begin to lose resiliency. We develop little arthritic pains in joints and hands, or lose muscle tone and strength. However, these are far easier to deal with than loss of eyesight. Age related macular degeneration is such a condition and the most common cause of blindness in people 50 years or older.

Age related macular degeneration attacks the central part of the retina, with the formation of additional blood cells beneath the retina. The growth of these blood cells causes leaking of fluids from the eyes, often resulting in scar tissue and eventual loss of sight. Typically, both eyes are affected, although sometimes in varying degrees.

There are two types of age related macular degeneration, referred to as “dry” or “wet”. The dry type accounts for 90% of cases. With the dry type, visual cells cease functioning. To date, there is no effective treatment for this type.

The wet form of age related macular degeneration is treatable, but is also far more aggressive, usually resulting in blindness in a period of three months to a few years. Laser treatment may help in the shorter term.

Because this condition affects the central portion of the retina, the patient retains some peripheral vision, but that vision is often distorted and cloudy. People with this form of age related macular degeneration are often quite sensitive to light and may perceive light where there is none.

Early symptoms of age related macular degeneration include blurry vision in the central portion of the eyes, distortions of perception of shape or size of objects and light sensitivity. The condition is not particularly painful, although some degree of discomfort may occur.

Recent research suggests that genetic factors are involved in the development of age related macular degeneration. It is certain that diet plays an important role as a preventative factor.

It’s been found that people who disdain foods throughout their lifetime, known to help prevent age related macular degeneration, are far more likely to develop this condition.

Here are some foods that are shown to be powerful preventatives. It’s never too late to start including quantities of these food in your diet.

It’s fairly easy to identify foods high in carotenoids, antioxidants valuable to the prevention of AMD. Carotenoids produce the bright yellow, orange and green colors in produce. Ample amounts of these fresh fruits and veggies can prevent AMD.

The list is long, so if you dislike some, there’s plenty more from which to choose.

Carrots, collards, cantaloupe, carrots, grapes, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, yams, yellow corn, and yellow, orange and red bell peppers are all rich sources of these antioxidants.

Among the dark green vegetables, asparagus, aragula, broccoli, chard, endive, dandelion leaves, lettuce, mustard greens, spinach, and parsley are among the best.

So protect yourself against age related macular degeneration. It is preventable. Learn about age related macular degeneration early enough to reduce your risk, by reading the book: Protect Your Sight: How to Save Your Vision in the Epidemic of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder

I swear, there are so many mental disorders now days. I often wonder if we’re just making things up. Maybe some random medical scientist nut somewhere wants to achieve recognition, so he comes up with a new disorder that concerns children who play video games too much. It could be called excessive arcade syndrome. Hmm, maybe I should research that one on my own and get a Nobel Prize or something. Anyway, not to belittle some of the legitimate health issues out there, but you get the picture. Some are definitely a greater concern than others. So, what do you make of attention deficit disorder? Or is it attention deficit hyperactivity disorder? This is an affliction I once believed to be absurd. You know, maybe something that only affects children. I questioned its validity because pretty much all children I ever met were hyper and lacked a decent attention span. However, then in college I met an adult who really had ADD.

My junior year of college, I met a 24 year old fellow that was the same year and major as myself. He came across as a cool and outgoing kind of guy. I thought, here’s a buddy I can hang out with at times. Then during class I noticed something. The guy couldn’t sit still. The entire class of 60 plus people was quiet except for the professor. Well, and this guy, who apparently grappled with attention deficit disorder. He just sat there bouncing his knee and tapping his pen on the desk. And it was really loud and obnoxious. For some reason it threw me back. Once I questioned him after class, he filled me in on his attention deficit disorder affliction and claimed he couldn’t help it. Hmm, not much I could say about that.

Some individuals still believe that attention deficit disorder is an affliction that doesn’t even exist. I have to disagree here. Especially after knowing someone who is burdened by it. In reality, at least 60 percent of children who express symptoms of attention deficit disorder carry them on to adulthood. This has been proven through routine studies. Some individuals just have a difficult time staying focused and sitting still. Learn more about attention deficit disorder and how many Americans it affects before jumping to conclusions like I originally did.
